An associate professor at Charleston Southern University — a Christian university — has gained tremendous support after he was reportedly fired because an image of his award-winning facial hair was used by a local brewery.
In a public post on his Facebook page last Friday, former professor Paul Roof wrote, “I was fired from my position as Associate Professor of Sociology because my image … appears on a beer can.” Read Roof’s full statement below:

According to Inside Higher Ed, Charleston Southern University was offended “because the Baptist university does not tolerate alcohol use. The university takes this so seriously that it bars students from wearing clothing referencing alcohol or putting up posters from alcohol companies.”
Here’s what the beer cans look like:

The beer — a brown ale called “Chucktown Follicle Brown” — was being sold to raise money for Lowcountry Women with Wings, a local Charleston charity that raises awareness and funding for women with ovarian cancer. A fundraising drive for the group that launched after Roof was fired has raised over $ 3,000 since Friday.
We have reached out to Charleston Southern University for more information on Paul Roof’s statement, and will update with any comment.
